Comparison of Interplanetary Disturbances at the near Spacecraft with Coronal Mass Ejections at the Sun

چکیده
We examined interplanetary magnetic field disturbances recorded at the NEARShoemaker spacecraft when it was above either the east or west solar limb as seen from Earth, and then we identified the associated coronal mass ejections (CMEs) detected above the limbs by the SOHO/LASCO coronagraph. We found 10 cases where a nonrecurring IP disturbance could be associated with a CME. Eight of the disturbances included a magnetic flux rope signature. Flux rope chirality and axis orientation were determined for each one and compared with chirality and axis orientation at the Sun, as inferred from flux-rope signatures – filaments and sigmoids – that could be associated with the CMEs. In most cases, the chirality and orientation inferred from these preeruption flux rope signatures agreed well with the flux rope signatures at NEAR. These results suggest, in agreement with Plunkett et al. (2000), that the flux ropes existed prior to eruption and that the flux ropes on the Sun become flux ropes in interplanetary space. Comparisons of the CME speeds to the time-of-flight (TOF) average speeds showed that flux ropes are less accelerated or decelerated by the solar wind than are the CME leading edges. These results imply that the faint features or loops that make up the CME leading edges are probably distinct from the flux ropes.

Commission 10: Solar Activity
Commission 10 aims at the study of various forms of solar activity, including networks, plages, pores, spots, fibrils, surges, jets, filaments/prominences, coronal loops, flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), solar cycle, microflares, nanoflares, coronal heating etc., which are all manifestation of the interplay of magnetic fields and solar plasma. Increasingly important is the study of solar ...
متن کاملSTEREO observations of interplanetary coronal mass ejections and prominence deflection during solar minimum period
In this paper we study the occurrence rate and solar origin of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) using data from the two Solar TErrestrial RElation Observatory (STEREO) and the Wind spacecraft. We perform a statistical survey of ICMEs during the late declining phase of solar cycle 23. Observations by multiple, well-separated spacecraft show that even at the time of extremely weak so...
متن کاملStudying geoeffective interplanetary coronal mass ejections between the Sun and Earth: Space weather implications of Solar Mass Ejection Imager observations
[1] Interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) are the primary cause of severe space weather at Earth because they drive shocks and trigger geomagnetic storms that can damage spacecraft and ground-based systems. The Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) is a U. S. Air Force experiment with the ability to track ICMEs in white light from near the Sun to Earth and beyond, thus providing an extended...
متن کاملThe Decay of Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections and Forbush Decrease Recovery Times
We investigate the relation between Forbush cosmic ray decrease recovery time, and coronal mass ejection angular size and transit time between the Sun and Earth. We identify 10 Forbush decreases from ground based neutron count rates between 1997 and 2000, with the addition of the Halloween 2003 event, that can be associated with single coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in the SOHO LASCO CME Catalog...

[1] We investigate the relation between Forbush cosmic ray decrease recovery time and coronal mass ejection transit time between the Sun and Earth. We identify 17 Forbush decreases from ground-based neutron count rates between 1978 and 2003 that occur during the same phase in the solar cycle and can be associated with single coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in the SOHO LASCO CME Catalog or previou...
